Theophilus Sackey is currently a Senior Research Scientist and Manager of the Medical Radiation Physics Centre (MRPC) with the Radiological and Medical Sciences Research Institute (RAMSRI) of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) and has contributed to training several medical physicists, both local and foreign. He is the Radiation Safety Officer for the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, and provides Physics support for the Centre.

His research interests include radiation safety and radiation protection, radiation dosimetry and measurements, optimization of radiation dose in radiodiagnosis and nuclear medicine, and strong leadership skills coupled with spoken communication skills and the ability to work with a team to achieve target objectives. He has supervised students’ theses, co-authored 3 books and 24 research articles. He has delivered several public lectures focusing on radiation medicine research and medical physics development within the African region.

He lectures Radiological Physics Residency Programme in Radiation Oncology and Diagnostic Radiology at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Kumasi-Ghana. He also lectures Oral Radiology and Applied Physics at the University of Ghana Dental School, Accra, and Accra College of Medicine respectively.

He is a Member, of the Ghana Institute of Physics (MGHINSTP), Member, Ghana Society for Medical Physics (GSMP), Member, International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), Member, Federation of African Medical Physics Organization, (FAMPO), Member, Ghana Association for Radiation Protection (GARP), Research Scientist Association (RSA), Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, Trustee, and Cancer Society of Ghana.

Mr. Sackey is a Project Coordinator for IAEA Regional Project in Medical Imaging Physics; Course Supervisor, for Nine IAEA Fellows in a TC-Fellowship Group on Clinical Training for Medical Physicists in Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine; Course Director and Resource Person on update Course for the Faculty of Radiology and Radiotherapy, Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons; Participated in Task Force Meeting (Expert Mission for the International Atomic Energy Agency) to identify Information Communication Technology (ICT) Material for Medical Physicists Specializing in Nuclear Medicine, Bloemfontein, South Africa, Task Force Meeting (Expert Mission for the IAEA) to Report on the Recognition, Education and Training of Medical Physicists in Africa, Johannesburg, South Africa; Participated in Regional Meeting with Heads of Nuclear Medicine Centres and Chief Medical Physicists in Nuclear Medicine in Africa, Vienna Austria; Participated in the Installation and Commissioning of the Co-60 Unit Amra Curieton, Simulator and Prowess Treatment Planning System (TPS) for the National Centre for Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine; Participated in the Commissioning of the Varian Simulator at St. Thomas’ and Guy’s Hospital, London UK; Involved in the IAEA/WHO TLD Postal Dose Service; Participated in the Commissioning of the Orthovoltage Machine at the National Centre for Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine Korle Bu Teaching Centre

He is the Chairman of the Risk Management Committee of RAMSRI/GAEC; the Chairman, of the Scientific Information and Technology Transfer Committee of RAMSRI/GAEC. He is a Visiting Lecturer at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria; University of Nigeria Enugu; University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Nigeria; University of Jos Teaching Hospital, Nigeria; Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Nigeria; University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Nigeria; University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City Nigeria, and an External Examiner for some high-profile universities in Ghana and Nigeria.
