Professor Gabriel Ayum Teye, the Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies, has urged Medical Physicists and radiographers to redefine their motives as professionals to improve health care delivery.
He said the aim of some medical and health practitioners was to use their profession as a money making venture, and collapse major health facilities in the country, as well as retard the quality of healthcare delivery to the citizenry.
Prof. Ayum Teye in a speech read on his behalf at Tamale, at the opening of the third edition of the Ghana-Norway collaboration in Medical Physics and Radiography Education.
Speaking on the theme, “MRI, Ultrasound and X-ray imaging”, he urged medical professionals to be conscious of their professional ethics to ensure improved healthcare delivery.
He said there was the over-growing need for expertise in the imaging modalities and enhancing the skill-set of professionals in medical physics and radiography in these areas to ensure improved quality medical imaging services delivery.
“Professional trained radiographers are limited in Ghana, and UDS will be contributing its quota to add more to the few radiographers in the country through the introduction of (BSc) in Medical Imaging Technology programme”, he added.
The project titled Ghana-Norway collaboration in medical physics and radiography education is to establish and strengthen partnership for education and research within the fields of medical physics, radiation protection as well as radiography.
The project is aimed at increasing mobility of medical and radiography students, increase contact between academic staff as well as increase internationalization at the levels of Masters and PhD programs in medical physics and radiography between partner institutions.
The project is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research: and Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
About 60 participants from Ghana, Nigeria, United State as well as Norway are taking part in the 2018 third edition of the Ghana-Norway summer school.
